MOTW Manchester United versus Liverpool

MOTW Manchester United versus Liverpool

The first Premier League match of this weekend is by far the one everybody want to see. Therefore the match of this week (MOTW) is the one we’ve been watching on Saturday. The MOTW Manchester United versus Liverpool is one for the second spot in the league, therefore both teams want to win this one. Man United started this match with a two point lead over the in form Liverpool.

MOTW Manchester United versus Liverpool line-ups

Manchester United
David de Gea, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Ashley Young, Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay, Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku.

Liverpool
Loris Karius, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Emre Can, James Milner, Alexander Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

It took both teams only fourteen minutes before the ball fell in the back of the net. Lukaku extends a long ball by de Gea. Rashford received this ball and hitted it hard against the back of the net behind Karius. Ten minutes later it was Rashford again who managed to find the net of Liverpool’s goal. With the 2-0 lead after 24 minutes this match looks won by Man United.

One of the weirdest own goals I’ve seen for awhile brought the tension back in the game. Eric Bailly wanted to clear the ball, but the ball went behind his own goalkeeper. Liverpool had everything to play for with the 2-1 score. Mourinho got scared and decided to bring Marouane Fellaine for Marcus Rashford. The Man United fans weren’t too happy with this substitution. In the end it didn’t matter, because Liverpool failed to score the equaliser.

With this victory the Mancunians created a gap of 5 points to Liverpool. Tottenham took over the third place after beating Bournemouth this afternoon. It looks to me that Man United secured the second place with this victory. Or they need to progress in the Champions League and prefer a good result in that tournament over the second place. It’s possible that Mourinho decide to rest his players in the Premier League when a top 4 place is secured, so they can focus on the Champions League.
