This is the third week of the CL round of 16. In this post I walk through the results of the English teams this week. Read my 2018 Champions League round of 16 part 3 post and find out how I experienced the matches of Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
2018 Champions League round of 16 part 3
The Reds already closed this tie by winning 0-5 in Portugal. Because of their busy schedule, Klopp decided to rest some of his regulars. The likes of Alberto Moreno and Adam Lallana got the chance to impress their manager. They failed doing so. This was the most boring match of this round of 16 so far. Neither of these teams really wanted to make a match out of it and failed to score a goal. With this result it’s Liverpool that continues to the Champions League quarter finals.
The Citizens won 0-4 in Basel and knew they would continue to the next round. Pep Guardiola changed almost his entire team and they took the lead early in the match. Gabriel Jesus finished an cross by Bernardo Silva in the 7th minute of this match. This was at the same time the last highlight for Man City in this match. Ten minutes later Basel scored the equaliser. Man City wasn’t really motivated and that let to a 1-2 score for the Swiss. Michael Lang scored the winning goal, just like he did against Manchester United earlier this Champions League tournament.
The Spurs needed to defend a 2-2 draw from the away match. They controlled the first half and it was Heung-Min Son who scored the first goal of this match at the end of the first half. Juventus did not panic and they let the Spurs dominated possession. The Old Lady scored in the 64th and 67th minute out of the blue. I think it was the Spurs’ own fault. We all know they aren’t the team to lean back and let the opponent play, but if you want to win things you need to be smart. I was really surprised when I saw Spurs players rushing to speed up the play in the second half. When you’re 1-0 up and the opponents need to score 2 goals to proceed, you need to delay the game. The Spurs are dropped out of the Champions League due to this loss.
