We’ve seen the first eight 2018 Champions League round of 16 matches. The first leg of these ties are behind us so it is time to see how the English teams performed.
2018 Champions League round of 16
The Spurs start this round of 16 with an away match against Juventus. The Old Lady needed only ten minutes to gain a 2-0 lead on the Spurs. Harry Kane did something back for the Spurs, but a penalty kick in the dying second of the first half was awarded to Juventus. Higuain failed from the spot and the score stayed 2-1 at half time. Christian Eriksen scored the equaliser in the 70th minute of this match. The 2-2 score is a fine result for the Spurs with the second match at Wembley incoming.
I stated the Citizens have the best draw of the English teams. Within 23 minutes this tie was decided. Between the 14th and 23rd minute, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero all scored a goal. In the second half it was Gundogan who scored his second goal of the match. Man City won the away match with 0-4 and they won’t get in trouble in the second leg.
The Reds did exactly what they needed to do and more. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both scored a goal in the first half. Mane repeated that twice in the second half and Roberto Firmino also nicked one in. Liverpool won the match away in Portugal with 0-5 and we can freely say they are through to the next round.
The Blues played at home against Barcelona and it wasn’t good to watch. Chelsea parked the bus and tried to do something on the counter attack. They succeeded in the second half when Willian scored the 1-0 for Chelsea. The best player in the world Lionel Messi finally scored his first goal against Chelsea, when scoring the equaliser in the 75th minute. These were the only two highlights of this match.
Man United played away against Benfica and this was probably the most boring of all 8 in this Champions League round of 16. I don’t have much more to say about this match.
Which match in this 2018 Champions League round of 16 part 1 are you looking forward to the most?
