It’s from the start of this season a very special one for the English teams in Europe. For the first time in the history of football, 5 English teams qualified for the Champions League group stage. Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City directly qualified after finishing in the top 3 of the Premier League last season. Liverpool finished fourth and qualified after eliminating 1899 Hoffenheim in the CL qualification. Last but not least is Manchester United, they forced qualification after winning the Europa League last season. In this past I discuss the Tuesday matches of the English contenders in the 2017-2018 Champions League group stage round 2.
2017-2018 Champions League group stage round 2
Three English teams played their matches on Tuesday this week. These teams are Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
Without offending any team, Liverpool looks to be drawn in one of the easier groups in this Champions League. Sevilla is a strong contender, but Liverpool should be able to finish above NK Maribor and Spartak Moscow. An unlucky draw against Sevilla wasn’t the start the Reds wanted. Therefore it’s even more devastating that the second match against Spartak Moscow also finished in a draw. Liverpool is in second spot of the group now with 2 points out of 2 matches. They really need to step up in the next two matches against NK Maribor. The Reds need to win both matches in order to really compete for the first two places in the groups.
The Citizens are drawn in a group with Napoli, Shakhtar Donetsk and Feyenoord. Napoli should be the strongest contender in this group, so it was important to win the first two matches of the group against Shakhtar and Feyenoord. The start was good with a 0-5 victory over Feyenoord. The second match against Shakhtar was a lot harder. Goals by Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling finally led Man City to a 2-0 victory. When they win at least one of their upcoming matches against Napoli, Man City has a big change of finishing first in the group.
The Spurs had one of two important matches in the first round against Borussia Dortmund. The Spurs won their first match with a little bit of luck. The second round was an away match against Apoel Nicosia. In a group with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, it is very important to win both matches against Apoel. The Spurs did what they needed to do and need to thank Harry Kane for that. The striker is in absolute top form and scored a true hat-trick, leading his team to a 0-3 victory over Apoel. The Spurs share the first place with Real Madrid, both with 6 points. They are 6 point ahead of Apoel and Borussia Dortmund. It’s now interesting to see if they can manage to steal one or more points from the next two matches against Real Madrid.
Liverpool is the only English team so far without of victory in the 2017-2018 Champions League group stage round 2. They really need to step up in the next round!
