2017-18 Champions League group stage round 2

The last two English Champions League contenders played their 2017-18 Champions League group stage round 2 matches on Wednesday. Chelsea and Manchester United tried to take another step towards the next round of this Champions League season. In this post I will give my opinion on the matches of Chelsea and Manchester United.

2017-18 Champions League group stage round 2

Chelsea

The reigning Premier League champions Chelsea had the hardest match in their group stage this week. The away match against Atletico Madrid, two times Champions League finalist in the last four years. A stupid foul by David Luiz led to a penalty for Atletico Madrid. Antoine Griezmann netted this penalty and scored the first Champions League goal in Atletico Madrid’s new stadium. The second half was in favour of Chelsea and it was Alvaro Morata who scored the equaliser in the 59th minute of the match. The match headed towards a 1-1 draw, until Michy Batshuayi netted the winning goal in the last second of the match. With 6 points out of 4 matches, and two matches against Qarabag upcoming, Chelsea is flying towards the next round.

Manchester United

The Mancunians are just like Liverpool drawn in one of the easier groups this year. Jose Mourinho’s team won their first match with 3-0 over Basel. The second match was one in Russia. The away match against CSKA Moscow is their next step towards the next round of the Champions League. The start of this match was perfect for Man United. In form striker Romelu Lukaku scored his first goal of this match after 4 minutes. 14 minutes later it was Anthony Martial who netted a penalty. Another goal by Lukaku led to a 3-0 advantage before the first 30 minutes where played. This gave Man United the chance to step back and played an easy game. Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored Man United’s fourth goal in the second half. The Russians scored a goal in the dying second of this match, so Man United won this match with 1-4. 3 points out of the next two matches against Benfica should be a very good step towards winning this group.
